You must hold comprehensive private health insurance that meets Spanish requirements
You must not work in Spain — including remote work for foreign employers (this is an important point that catches many people out)
The application must be made from your home country, through the Spanish consulate in your region

The visa is initially granted for one year, and can be renewed for two-year periods thereafter. After five years you can apply for long-term residency, and after ten years for Spanish citizenship.

The Part Nobody Warns You About: The TIE Card

Obtaining your Non Lucrative Visa is only the first step. Once you arrive in Spain, you have a limited window to register with your local authorities and obtain your TIE — your Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero, or Foreign Identity Card. This is your proof of legal residency in Spain, and without it you simply cannot function properly — opening a bank account, signing a rental contract, registering with a doctor — all of these require your TIE.

The process involves:

Registering on the Padrón — your local municipal register
Booking an appointment at your local Extranjería office or National Police station
Attending in person with your full documentation
Biometric data collection
Collecting the card once it's ready

Sounds straightforward. In practice, appointments fill up weeks in advance, documentation requirements vary by region, and a single missing or incorrectly formatted document can send you back to square one.
