Why the Non Lucrative Visa is the Dream Route to Spain — And How to Get It Right

For many of our clients, the moment they discover the Non Lucrative Visa is the moment Spain stops being a dream and starts being a plan.

It's the visa that says: if you can support yourself financially, Spain welcomes you. No job required. No employer to sponsor you. Just you, your savings or pension income, and the life you've always imagined living in the sunshine.

We've helped dozens of international clients navigate this process — from the initial paperwork in their home country all the way to collecting their TIE residency card on the ground in Spain. And we can tell you from experience: done properly, this visa opens the door to an extraordinary new chapter. Done without the right support, it can be one of the most frustrating bureaucratic processes you've ever encountered.

Here's everything you need to know.

What is the Non Lucrative Visa?

The Non Lucrative Visa (NLV) is a long-stay Spanish visa designed for people who want to live in Spain without working there. It's particularly popular with early retirees, people with passive income from investments or rental properties, and anyone who has reached a point in life where they want to trade the daily grind for something altogether more enjoyable.

The key requirements are straightforward in principle:

  • You must demonstrate sufficient financial means to support yourself — currently around €2,400 per month for a single applicant, with additional amounts for each dependent

  • You must hold comprehensive private health insurance that meets Spanish requirements

  • You must not work in Spain — including remote work for foreign employers (this is an important point that catches many people out)

  • The application must be made from your home country, through the Spanish consulate in your region

The visa is initially granted for one year, and can be renewed for two-year periods thereafter. After five years you can apply for long-term residency, and after ten years for Spanish citizenship.

The Part Nobody Warns You About: The TIE Card

Here's where things get interesting — and where having boots on the ground in Spain makes all the difference.

Obtaining your Non Lucrative Visa is only the first step. Once you arrive in Spain, you have a limited window to register with your local authorities and obtain your TIE — your Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero, or Foreign Identity Card. This is your proof of legal residency in Spain, and without it you simply cannot function properly — opening a bank account, signing a rental contract, registering with a doctor — all of these require your TIE.

The process involves:

  • Registering on the Padrón — your local municipal register

  • Booking an appointment at your local Extranjería office or National Police station

  • Attending in person with your full documentation

  • Biometric data collection

  • Collecting the card once it's ready

Sounds straightforward. In practice, appointments fill up weeks in advance, documentation requirements vary by region, and a single missing or incorrectly formatted document can send you back to square one.

This is exactly why our clients don't do this alone.

Our Premium Service: From Application to TIE Card

At Encantada World, we offer a comprehensive, premium service that covers the entire journey — not just the visa application, but everything that follows once you land.

Before you arrive: We work with you to prepare every document required for your NLV application — financial statements, health insurance, background checks, medical certificates, translations and apostilles. We know exactly what each consulate requires and how to present your application to give it the strongest possible chance of approval.

When you arrive: This is where our boots on the ground become invaluable. We are physically there with you — booking your Padrón registration, securing your Extranjería appointment, accompanying you to the police station, checking every document before you walk through the door. We have the local knowledge, the contacts, and the experience to navigate every step of this process efficiently and without stress.

As Brian and Donna Applegate discovered when they came to us with a complex situation and a tight deadline:

"They truly held our hands for the entire process. Maria, Stephanie and the Encantada Team are the smart way to ensure success."Brian & Donna Applegate

And John Schwartz, who came to us from the US:

"Maria, a native Valencian lawyer, successfully shepherded our visa renewals and continues to advise us. We couldn't be happier with all the services Encantada has provided."John Schwartz

Is the Non Lucrative Visa Right for You?

The NLV suits a wide range of international buyers and relocators. It's particularly well suited to:

  • Early retirees who have savings, a pension, or investment income and want to start living their best life now rather than waiting for a fixed retirement age.

  • Remote workers — with one important caveat. The NLV technically does not permit working in Spain, including for foreign employers. If you work remotely, Spain's newer Digital Nomad Visa may be a better fit. We can advise you on which route is right for your specific situation.

  • Buyers purchasing property in Spain who want to spend extended periods in the country beyond the standard 90-day tourist allowance.

  • Couples and families relocating together — the NLV can cover a primary applicant plus dependants, including a spouse and children.

Why Valencia and the Costa Blanca?

Our clients choose Valencia and the Costa Blanca for countless reasons — the climate, the food, the culture, the extraordinary quality of life. But there are practical reasons too.

Valencia is one of Spain's most affordable major cities, with property prices and living costs significantly lower than Madrid or Barcelona. It has a thriving, welcoming expat community, excellent healthcare, world-class gastronomy and a pace of life that simply cannot be replicated in Northern Europe or North America.

The Costa Blanca offers something slightly different — a warmer microclimate, a more relaxed coastal lifestyle, and a wide range of property options from contemporary villas to traditional fincas. Both regions have strong international buyer markets and excellent infrastructure.

And critically — we know both areas intimately. We know which local offices are efficient and which require extra patience. We know which documents to prepare in advance. We know the people who can help when things get complicated.

That knowledge is what makes the difference between a smooth, successful relocation and a stressful one.

Ready to Start Your Spanish Chapter?

The Non Lucrative Visa is one of the most life-changing steps our clients ever take. We consider it a privilege to be part of that journey — from the first conversation about whether Spain is right for you, all the way to the moment you hold your TIE card and your new life truly begins.

If you're considering the Non Lucrative Visa and want to understand exactly what's involved, we'd love to talk. Our process starts with a conversation — no pressure, no obligation — just an honest discussion about your situation and how we can help.
